Course Aim (all learning environments)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health, and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe. You’ll also learn how to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This could include self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more. A MHFA phone app and downloads are available to use during the course, so it is recommended that they are able to view material from the internet prior to the course – please ask for details if you think this is a barrier to someones learning.

On-Line option

Following the traditional Face-to-Face syllabus, the On-Line Adult Mental Health First Aid course has been ‘slightly’ modified to suit the new delivery medium. Each delegate (max 16 per course) will receive, prior to the course start date, a full course pack in the post and emailed instructions detailing how to logon to the Learning Management System (LMS) and access downloads and the brand new market leading phone app to use during the course. The Live Sessions, via the LMS will require all delegates/tutor/s to log in and use Video/Microphone tools from their own computers to participate – breakout ‘rooms’, group and individual sessions will be used/available to help learning.

Course Objective

Upon successful completion of the training program and final assessment, Mental Health First Aiders will have:

  • An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix

A theory based course over 12 hours, typically carried out over 2 consecutive days (other delivery options are available); the on-line, tutor lead course can be run over 2 full days (consecutive or not) or split into 4 x 4.5 hour sessions. All those attending all training sessions will receive a nationally recognised certificate which is valid for 3 years. In addition those that attend are eligable to, at additional cost, to take the Level 3 Award in Understanding Mental Health First Aid exam – please ask for further details (this is not a requirement of the course but some individules may find that this formal exam and qualification is of benefit)

Each candidate will receive, by download, a ‘Adult MHFA Manual Two Day’ colour reference manual and be sent to use on the course a ‘Adult MHFA Workbook’ which are a clear, concise and valuable review tool for future reference.
